Head Master's Lecture Series

Head Master's Lecture Series

30 November 2012
Sir Mark Allen, diplomat and expert on the Middle East, gave Sixth Form students an insight into the conflict.

Sixth-form students raised provoking and thoughtful questions about the rights of women during a question and answer session with Sir Mark Allen, former diplomat and Middle East expert, during his recent talk in the Head Master's lecture series.

Sir Mark gave the students a fascinating insight into the current political situation and the origins of the Arab Spring, discussing the cultures and traditions of individual countries in the region. He spoke with great clarity from an interesting perspective, tracing historical routes back to the Babylonian empire.

Sixth-form student, Shree Patel, says:”Sir Mark’s talk was so interesting. The questions about the rights of women were particularly relevant – not only to us as an all-girls school, but also to every woman in society. Sir Mark described the increase in women’s rights as an inevitable “revolution”.

We have had a fascinating series of Head Master’s Lectures over recent months. Speakers have included Lord Harries of Pentregarth, Susanna Brown (SCHS 2000), curator of the V&A’s jubilee exhibition, Simon Rosselli, member of the Magic Circle and parent, and Dylan Martinez, chief photographer for Reuters in the UK and Ireland.
